"Ilda" — CENC Workshop 4.0

Dance, dance, dance! What happens when an industrial robot dances? Ilda is not a humanoid robot but a mechanical arm whose movements are fundamentally different from those of a human body. And yet, something surprising occurs: as we watch Ilda, we feel the urge to mirror its motions, as if our own body were dancing along. This form of physical identification raises an intriguing question: how can we connect with a non-human body through movement?
In dance, it is often explored how movement is not only an expression of an individual body but also something that transmits, resonates, and spreads. Concepts such as kinesthetic empathy—the physical experience of movement through observation—play a central role here. Ilda demonstrates that this empathy is not limited to human forms. The robot’s choreography activates our own bodily perception, revealing that dance is a shared experience, regardless of the dancer’s physical nature.
Through light reflections and rhythmic motions, the installation expands our understanding of embodiment and dance. Ilda dances—and we dance along, at least in our imagination.
